Mechanics Hall (second) opens.
August 31, 1882
(Aug.) Architect: William Preston. The headquarters of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, it is located at 97-135 Huntington Avenue. Built by the New England Manufacturers’ and Mechanics’ Institute, it seats 15,000 people, and is the first large institution to relocate to the developing Fenway area. The cornerstone of the red brick building was laid on March 15, 1881. The building is sold in 1958 and torn down to make way for construction of the Prudential Center in January 1959.
